  166. Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
  167. If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
  168. probably experienced this once or twice.  Normally, the solution is to
  169. figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
  170. utility and manually change the file type and creator.
  171.  
  172. Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
  173. to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator.  This program is
  174. very
  175. easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
  176. wonder if it ran at all!  Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
  177. System 6.0.7 users.

  180. allow the user to extract file tag information.

  204. Version 2.3.0 implements Ambrosia Software's new license code
  205. registration system, which allows registered users to personalize
  206. their copy of ColorSwitch and remove the shareware notices.
  207.  
  208. ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch
  209. between the available color modes of any attached monitors.  Instead
  210. of the inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time
  211. you want to switch between color modes, you can simply hold down the
  212. ColorSwitch modifier keys and click anywhere on the monitor you want
  213. to change.  A menu will pop up listing the available color modes for
  214. the monitor you clicked on; just select the color mode you want and
  215. ColorSwitch will acquiesce.
  216.  
  217. Under System 7 or later, things are even easier: ColorSwitch installs
  218. a Monitor icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can
  219. simply choose the color mode you desire for your main monitor.
  220.  
  221. ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks.  Certain
  222. programs require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in
  223. order to run, and using the Monitors control panel every time you need
  224. to switch color modes grows tiresome quickly.  Your Macintosh will
  225. also operate more quickly if you normally operate in black and white
  226. mode, switching to a more colorful setting only when you need to.
  227. ColorSwitch makes switching color modes so quick and convenient, you
  228. will find yourself using it constantly to improve your quality of life
  229. at the computer.

  288. Enclosed is a Macintosh RTF file, suitable for posting on an office door
  289. (it's on mine!) of Jabberwocky vs. Tablespoons. These two poems appear
  290. side-by-side for ease in comparison. Jabberwocky was posted here twice.
  291. Mark Lomas posted three typographical corrections, but his version was
  292. missing punctuation and dropped one word ("And" from line 13). The version
  293. here has been carefully compared with the book version, including correct
  294. typographical em-dashes and apostrophes. (Line indentation has not been
  295. preserved, since that made comparison a bit harder.) Tablespoons is the
  296. version posted by Robert McNally, as "recognized" by the Apple Newton, save
  297. that a "recognition" of "through" as "though" on line 17 has been corrected
  298. (I suspect this was a typo on Robert's part; at least I hope so). Robert's
  299. copyright is included.

  428. Oracle is a Control Panel that you place into your System Folder.
  429. Oracle will present you with a random thoughtful quotation each time
  430. you start up your computer or once a day, whichever you specify.

  432. Oracle also allows you to print out any quotations that you find of
  433. particular interest, for later contemplation. This could perhaps be
  434. your most practical program for your Macintosh, because it helps to
  435. perfect the most important part of your computer system: you.
  436.  
  437. Oracle has a library of over 1,000 profound readings, which accounts
  438. for its large size. Although it takes up a fair amount of disk space,
  439. Oracle uses very little system memory (around 5K), and works on any
  440. machine under System 6.0 or later (yes, it is System 7.0 friendly).

  467. Here is RunOSAScript XFCN v.0.72 for HyperCard 2.1, by Donald Olson.
  468. It was originally included on an AppleScript beta CD;  it is being
  469. posted and submitted to the net archives with the author's permission.
  470.  
  471. The XFCN accepts an AppleScript in text form as an argument,
  472. and executes the script if it is valid.  It is probably easiest
  473. to write, test, and debug AppleScripts using the Script Editor.
  474.  
  475. See the stack script and "Execute" button scripts for error checks
  476. and calling syntax.  The AppleScript example uses Finder 7.1.3 for
  477. simplicity, but you can use any valid AS commands or scripts that
  478. invoke other AppleScriptable software.
  479.  
  480. Requires AppleScript and HyperCard 2.1.  AppleScript is included
  481. with a tutorial book from BMUG called "The Tao of AppleScript",
  482. ISBN 1-56830-075-1.  I've heard that there is another Applescript
  483. book by Danny Goodman that also includes the AppleScript software;
  484. that book may be of interest to people who like Goodman's HyperCard
  485. books, and those who intend to use AS with HC.

  634. SSnedhils assessment of the program with one exception. That is namely
  635. that it will help on even 4 meg machines. Optimem usually lowers the
  636. static allocation by 50% and on more hten one occassion lowered it by as
  637. much as 75% (For example I had Ecel running on 512 K instead of the
  638. default 2048 K) With savings like this, it is suddenly possible to run
  639. multiple applications whre before two caused problems. I've been running
  640. this program for a good 6 weeks and had essentially no problems. If
  641. anyone is interested, I can see about sending out a copy of the article.

  801. We have a problem while printing with Clarisworks 2.0 on an
  802. ImageWriter II.  It does'nt print on the right of the page for smaller
  803. margins than 1,5 inch.  Example:  if we ask for a 1 inch margin,
  804. everything is allright on the screen, but the printer uses a 1,5 inch
  805. margin.  Same documents printed on Laser printers are o.k.
  806. Documents from other applications with smaller margins are o.k. also.
  807. We tried changing versions of the driver AppletalkImageWriter, but it
  808. did not solve the problem.  Finally, we tried with an older version of
  809. Clarisworks (1.0Fv3), and the margin was fine.
  810. Does somebody have a solution for this?

  1076. I have the my LineLink 144e hooked to an A/B switch and use it
  1077. with both a Mac and a PC--no problem.  Cable-wise, I have a
  1078. combination (ie, mess) of cables and it works contrary to some
  1079. discussion that the supplied cable must be used. I am using the
  1080. supplied cable in there somewhere, though.
  1081.  
  1082. One interesting "feature" however, is that Red Ryder and White
  1083. Knight do not connect at any speed. Both packages time out
  1084. trying to logon our VAX. However, MacKnowledge and MacKermit
  1085. work just fine on the Mac side, as do Kermit and  ProComm on the
  1086. PC side (9600, our fastest).

  1272. Most of the software is run off of a server on Ethernet. The things I want to
  1273. able to update are inits and other system folder stuff.

  1314. Warning - Apple Software Dispatch is a Trojan Horse
  1315.  
  1316. Apple Software Dispatch is Apple's new way to buy application software.
  1317. They send you a CD (mine came unsolicited in the mail). You run an application
  1318. on the CD, register your CD by a code that comes with the package, and
  1319. then you can call an 800 number to purchase applications on the CD.
  1320. You give them a credit card number - they give you some code number that
  1321. unlocks/decrypts the application.
  1322.  
  1323. While the documentation nowhere says so, THE SOFTWARE DISPATCH APPLICATION
  1324. INSTALLS AN EXTENSION IN YOUR SYSTEM. On my system, this extension
  1325. clearly conflicted with something, rendering my disks (hard, floppy _and_
  1326. CD-ROM) unmountable. Removing the extension fixed the problem. Booting
  1327. with Software Dispatch as the only extension also worked, so Software
  1328. Dispatch is not inherently buggy - it just suffers from classic Mac
  1329. extension conflict problems. However, since this extension is not
  1330. mentioned in the documentation, there are people who are in for a rude shock.
  1331. And, since the symptoms for this problem are just a dialog saying
  1332. "This disk is unreadable on this Macintosh. Would you like to initialize
  1333. it?", there are people who are going to waste endless amounts of time,
  1334. restoring and rebuilding their disks needlessly. After they do that,
  1335. if they still don't notice the Software Dispatch extension, they still
  1336. won't have fixed the problem.

  1338. I called the Apple Software Dispatch 800 number to report this problem.
  1339. After convincing them that I was calling for technical support for
  1340. Software Dispatch itself, not an application I purchased through Software
  1341. Dispatch, I ended up playing 3 days of phone tag with a support person.
  1342. The end result: "We'll report this to a technician. I can't say when they
  1343. will get back to you - but it's apt to be a few weeks."

  1347.     * You don't install software on someone's machine without informing
  1348.       them in documentation and during the installation process.
  1349.       I _assume_ that the Software Dispatch extension is benign.
  1350.       I don't _know_ that it is. Indeed, I had to stumble across
  1351.       its very existence. It's stuff like this that starts ugly
  1352.       rumors and very, very bad PR.
  1353.     * If you are in the software distribution and installation business,
  1354.       you do tech support better than Apple Software Dispatch, especially
  1355.       given the point above.
  1356.     * You take reports of "this makes my machine unusable" a little
  1357.       more seriously, especially when you're launching a new means
  1358.       of software distribution. Doing otherwise only ends up shooting
  1359.       yourself in the foot.

  1361. I can't believe that I'm the only person to whom this has happened. While
  1362. I run a fairly complex Mac, I am relatively conservative about system
  1363. extensions - with one or two exceptions, the extensions I have aren't
  1364. particularly funky, they're from Apple or 3rd party vendors. I expect that
  1365. Apple will be suffering from real grief about this, and, regrettably, they
  1366. deserve every little bit of it.

  1389. much improved over version 4.0.5 which was an R4 server. Most of my
